Matrixyl is palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, a matrikine — a small peptide fragment based on a sequence (KTTKS) found in type I procollagen.
When collagen naturally breaks down in the skin, it releases similar fragments that act as messengers. These messengers signal fibroblasts (the cells that build the skin’s support structure) to increase production of new matrix components. Matrixyl copies this natural signal.
A palmitoyl (fatty acid) chain is attached to the peptide. This helps it pass through the skin’s outer barrier so it can reach the dermis.
Once there, it supports:
• Increased synthesis of collagen types I and III
• Production of fibronectin (a key structural protein)
• Regulation of glycosaminoglycans that contribute to skin hydration and volume
The result is a more supported dermal matrix. This can help reduce the visible depth and volume of wrinkles over time with consistent use.
