SS-31 is a lab-made synthetic tetrapeptide – a tiny chain of just 4 amino acids (D-Arg-2,6-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH) designed to penetrate cells and selectively target the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Developed by Dr. Hazel Szeto at Cornell and advanced by Stealth BioTherapeutics, it ss the world’s first approved mitochondria-targeted therapy. Unlike most peptides we’ve covered, it is not a general ‘repair’ or hormone signal, it specifically protects and restores the cell’s power plants (mitochondria) by binding cardiolipin.
Think of SS-31 as a ‘mitochondrial bodyguard.’ It goes straight to the inner mitochondrial membrane and fixes the damage that causes energy failure.
How it works (super simple):
– Selectively binds cardiolipin (a key lipid in the inner membrane).
– Stabilizes electron transport chain supercomplexes, reduces harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), prevents membrane leakage, and restores ATP production.
SS-31 has an excellent safety profile across trials, one of the cleanest mitochondria-targeted compounds tested.
In FDA approval data and long-term extension (TAZPOWER): Well-tolerated for years.
Most common (mild-moderate):
– Injection-site reactions (redness, itching, swelling, pain, most frequent but usually improve).
– Mild fatigue or headache (rare and transient).
– No major organ toxicity or serious systemic effects in studies.
– Accelerated approval means ongoing confirmatory trials are required.
– Theoretical hypersensitivity risk (rare).
Bottom line: Far safer than many experimental peptides, side effects are almost entirely local to the injection site.

Dosage:
Daily 2mg. Draw 2ml of Bac water and reconstitute with 10mg vial. Draw 40 units on 1ml syringe and administer subcutaneously every morning. One vial lasts 5 days.
For the 50mg – 2ml bac water into vial. Draw 8 units daily. Should last 25 days.
Cycling: Do the above for 4 weeks 3 times a year.
